Classic Albums - Elton John: Goodbye Yellow Brick Road

Reviewed by The Music Man on 2009-08-23  •  Reviews (27)  •  Read Full Review

I first received the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album as a Christmas gift when I was 7 years old. It was love at first sound, an affair that's still going strong 34 years later.

This Classic Albums DVD really delivers just about anything you would want to know about the story behind this great record in only about an hour. Of course, some may want more details (there are bonus features), but the DVD covers everything from archive footage to modern day interviews (within a few years' time), as well as more "technical" aspects. Elton John fans will not be disappointed!

There isn't really much to say here. People who grew up with this double album, as well as fans of the Classic Albums series, will love this DVD!

Editorial Review :: GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD gave Elton John his second number one album in both the American and British charts and provided him with four top ten singles. Interviews with Elton John himself, as well as with songwriting partner Bernie Taupin, there are contributions from musicians Davey Johnstone and Nigel Olsson, Gus Dudgeon (producer), David Hentschel (engineer), Del Newman (orchestral arranger) along with comments from Sir Tim Rice and Paul Gambaccini amongst others.

Featuring new and archive performances from Elton John as well as rare archive footage from the original recording sessions, this program provides a unique insight into the creation of this truly Classic Album.

Gitzo Classic Sport - Series 1 Geared Performance G1118 - Tripod

Reviewed by Larry Greisel on 2007-04-01  •  Reviews (1)  •  Read Full Review

The Gitzo G1118 is a member of the Gitzo "Classic Aluminum Tripod" family. The family includes the G0012, G1118 and G1212 (for 35 mm SLR's or cameras of similar weight); and the G1320, G1326 and G1312 Studex tripods (for medium-format cameras).

Gitzo tripods in the "Classic Aluminum Tripod" family are all-metal construction, elegantly simple in design, beautifully machined and finished. A lifetime investment. Please don't allow yourself to be tricked into buying a Manfrotto or similar crudely machined tripod with soft plastic fasteners.

Editorial Review :: 3-section legs plus a geared column makes this a good choice for all 35mm cameras and lightweight camcorders when shooting on location.Performance style tripods, are fitted with sliding stops, which enable the legs to be individually set at different angles, providing more flexibility including very low angle shots. There are two set angles:24? and 55?.

The Classic RCA Performances

Doreothy Kirsten was a front line soprano at the Metropolitan for over 30 years, specializing in Puccini and other lyric roles, including surprisingly Madama Butterfly which she sang over 30 times. But, Ms. Kirsten started out as a popular singer on the radio and it shows. She understands this genre, singing songs that require solid voices. The operetta selections are some of the most treasurable, I adore the Victor Herbert selections and the othes with Robert Merrill. Thank you, as always to the wonderful folks at Collectors Choice for making some wonderful older music available to modern audiences. What wouldn't we give for a soprano today with such a rich well supported voice.

Performance Practices in Classic Piano Music: Their Principles and Applications (Music: Scholarship and Performance)

This is one of the finest books ever written on classical piano music. It is a valuable resource to any pianist wishing to make informed decisions on ornamentation, articulation, and all aspects of classical style. Thank you Dr. Rosenblum for your monumental work.

Editorial Review ::

Performance today on either the pianoforte or the fortepiano can be at once joyful, musicianly, expressive, and historically informed. From this point of view, Sandra P. Rosenblum examines the principles of performing the music of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and their contemporaries as revealed in a variety of historical sources: their autographs and letters, early editions of their music, original instruments, and contemporary tutors and journals. She applies these findings to such elements of performance as dynamics, accentuation, pedaling, articulation and touch, technique and fingering, ornaments and embellishments, choice of tempo, and tempo flexibility.

Familiarity with the Classic conventions provides a framework for interpretation and an understanding of the choices available within the style, the amount of freedom a performer has, and which areas are ambiguous. Rosenblum's detailed study, copiously illustrated with musical examples, is invaluable for professional and amateur performers, serious piano students and their teachers and students of performance practices by Scarlatti and Clementi.

"... is and will remain unsurpassed as the study dealing with performance practice as it pertains to keyboard music of the Classical period." -- American Music Teacher

"Rosenblum's monumental achievement is thorough, objective, balanced, and imaginative, a compelling blend of love and respect for the solo, chamber, and concerto literature she addresses." -- Journal of Musicological Research

"The extent and quality of her research, the depth of her perception, and her musicianship together break new ground in the study of historic performance practice." -- Early Keyboard Journal

"Her attention to details is absolutely scrupulous; no stone unturned, no argument unquestioned or unstated." -- The Musical Times

"Its importance to thoughtful musicians cannot be overstated." -- Choice

"... thoroughly musicological." -- Performance Practice Review

"... indispensable... " -- New York Times
