High Performance Web Sites: Essential Knowledge for Front-End Engineers

Reviewed by Patrick Talmadge on 2010-03-18  •  Reviews (42)  •  Read Full Review

In this book Souders presents 14 rules that will cut the response time of a site by up to 50%. Steve Souders, Chief Performance Yahoo!, discovered these best practices while optimizing one of the highest traffic sites on the internet.

Unlike other books that focus on server side optimizations, this book focuses on client side performance improvements for Ajax, CSS, JavaScript, and images. Souders focuses on client side optimizations because the bulk of display time is in communications between the browser and the server. High Performance Web Sites provides specific examples and code snippets for the following 14 rules:

Make Fewer HTTP Requests
Use a Content Delivery Network
Add an Expires Header
Gzip Components
Put Stylesheets at the Top
Put Scripts at the Bottom
Avoid CSS Expressions
Make JavaScript and CSS External
Reduce DNS Lookups
Minify JavaScript
Avoid Redirects
Remove Duplicates Scripts
Configure ETags
Make Ajax Cacheable

I recommend this book to anyone interested in improving the performance of their website on a budget. The majority of these rules take very little time or money to implement. I've already added the YSlow extension to my FireBug extension in Firefox to start testing my site. I'm interested to find out what new information Steve Souders discusses in Even Faster Web Sites: Performance Best Practices for Web Developers, his second book.

Editorial Review ::

Want your web site to display more quickly? This book presents 14 specific rules that will cut 25% to 50% off response time when users request a page. Author Steve Souders, in his job as Chief Performance Yahoo!, collected these best practices while optimizing some of the most-visited pages on the Web. Even sites that had already been highly optimized, such as Yahoo! Search and the Yahoo! Front Page, were able to benefit from these surprisingly simple performance guidelines.

The rules in High Performance Web Sites explain how you can optimize the performance of the Ajax, CSS, JavaScript, Flash, and images that you've already built into your site -- adjustments that are critical for any rich web application. Other sources of information pay a lot of attention to tuning web servers, databases, and hardware, but the bulk of display time is taken up on the browser side and by the communication between server and browser. High Performance Web Sites covers every aspect of that process.

Each performance rule is supported by specific examples, and code snippets are available on the book's companion web site. The rules include how to:

  • Make Fewer HTTP Requests

  • Use a Content Delivery Network

  • Add an Expires Header

  • Gzip Components

  • Put Stylesheets at the Top

  • Put Scripts at the Bottom

  • Avoid CSS Expressions

  • Make JavaScript and CSS External

  • Reduce DNS Lookups

  • Minify JavaScript

  • Avoid Redirects

  • Remove Duplicates Scripts

  • Configure ETags

  • Make Ajax Cacheable

If you're building pages for high traffic destinations and want to optimize the experience of users visiting your site, this book is indispensable.

"If everyone would implement just 20% of Steve's guidelines, the Web would be a dramatically better place. Between this book and Steve's YSlow extension, there's really no excuse for having a sluggish web site anymore."

-Joe Hewitt, Developer of Firebug debugger and Mozilla's DOM Inspector

"Steve Souders has done a fantastic job of distilling a massive, semi-arcane art down to a set of concise, actionable, pragmatic engineering steps that will change the world of web performance."

-Eric Lawrence, Developer of the Fiddler Web Debugger, Microsoft Corporation

I thought, "what's the big deal? A shirt is a shirt." Well, on a recent hike of mine I didn't miss cold sweat being pressed against my back every time I put my pack on. Cotton does this but the Double Dry Core t-shirt doesn't. The shirt is light and just plain comfortable. You'll be glad you have it

High Performance MySQL: Optimization, Backups, Replication, and More

It's a good start point into high performance tunning, but not a deep into every concept, which is not possible in a single book. The book dives into some benchmark, optimization of queries, the capabilities of every storage engine, and also its weaknesses, some compared backup strategies, replication, and master-slave configurations, all well explained, up to MySQL 5.1, but with new versions in mind. I enjoy this book, although some concerns are hard by nature, and some kind of query optimization could be more graphical to better understanding.

Editorial Review :: High Performance MySQL is the definitive guide to building fast, reliable systems with MySQL. Written by noted experts with years of real-world experience building very large systems, this book covers every aspect of MySQL performance in detail, and focuses on robustness, security, and data integrity. High Performance MySQL teaches you advanced techniques in depth so you can bring out MySQL's full power. Learn how to design schemas, indexes, queries and advanced MySQL features for maximum performance, and get detailed guidance for tuning your MySQL server, operating system, and hardware to their fullest potential. You'll also learn practical, safe, high-performance ways to scale your applications with replication, load balancing, high availability, and failover. This second edition is completely revised and greatly expanded, with deeper coverage in all areas. Major additions include:
  • Emphasis throughout on both performance and reliability
  • Thorough coverage of storage engines, including in-depth tuning and optimizations for the InnoDB storage engine
  • Effects of new features in MySQL 5.0 and 5.1, including stored procedures, partitioned databases, triggers, and views
  • A detailed discussion on how to build very large, highly scalable systems with MySQL
  • New options for backups and replication
  • Optimization of advanced querying features, such as full-text searches
  • Four new appendices
The book also includes chapters on benchmarking, profiling, backups, security, and tools and techniques to help you measure, monitor, and manage your MySQL installations.

I had a class 6 card in my Canon Rebel XSI, when I would shoot action shots the camera would slow down after 6 shots... The specs on the camera say that it should take several hundred rapid shots on its Highest .JPG compression before a noticeable slowdown occured. Buying this card solved all my problems, I can take action shots without worry that I will miss the next lightning strike, or that perfect smile at a wedding. I recommend this card to anyone who needs to have speed. It certainly has it.
